Wichita, Kan. - Junior's Brent Bowers (Mulvane, Kan.) and Maggie Zakrzewski (Palatine, Ill.) cashed in at the 2009 Las Vegas Main Event Open Scratch Singles in December 2009. The current Shocker players won their respective divisions to claim scholarship dollars in one of the best under-22 tournaments in the nation. Bowers claimed $5,000 while Zakrzewski took home $1,500. In what proved to be an all Shocker final, Bowers defeated developmental team member Christian Jensen (Wichita, Kan.) 212-196. Throughout a tough, grinding game, Bowers and Jensen stayed closed until a 6-7-10 left by Jensen in the ninth frame gave Bowers the advantage he needed to close out the game. Jensen took home $3,000 for his second place finish. Also performing well was senior Josh Blanchard (Upland, Calif.) who entered matchplay as the top seed. However, Blanchard fell to his Shocker teammate Jensen in the semifinals in a close 200-193 loss. Blanchard?s third place finish gave him $2,000 and the Shockers a sweep of the top three male finishers. Also finishing well was developmental team member freshman Miguel Lopez (Peoria, Ariz.) and junior Jake Peters (Decatur, Ill.) who took 13th and 14th respectively. On the women?s side junior Maggie Zakrzewski (Palatine, Ill.) led throughout the tournament as she took the top seed after eight games of qualifying. In her first match of the semifinals, Zakrzewski matched up with future Shocker commit Kelsey Muther (Topeka, Kan.) in a 166-154 victory. Much like Zakrzewski, second seed Amanda Fry advanced with ease to the finals to have a showdown with the top seeded players for the title. Although both players struggled to adjust to the lanes, Zakrzewski pulled through for a 188-171 victory and a $1,500 top prize. Both Bowers and Zakrzewski will return to class next week and try to lead the Shockers to a repeat National Championship. The Shockers first team event will be Jan. 23-24 at the Blue and Gold Classic in South Bend, Ind.
